Exterior design and detailing

Creating immediate street appeal is all very well, but what if the house in question simply isn't able to meet the ever-changing demands of its natural environment?

This home, designed and built by Signature Homes Canterbury at Hampton Grange in Christchurch, thankfully has both the aesthetic and maintenance considerations well covered.

David and Kerry Magill, the husband and wife team behind the construction of the home, chose to take a combination cladding approach to the exterior, by combining James Hardie's 135mm Linea® Weatherboards with Titan® Facade Panels

“We settled on the Linea first, mainly for its lovely, sharp shadow lines,” says Kerry Magill. “It may be a modern, high-tech product but it looks as timeless as the timber weatherboards we've all grown up with, without any of the maintenance issues. We even used it to clad the chimney. We chose the smooth texture of the Titan panels simply as a way introducing a bit of contrast. The combined effect makes the whole outside of the house interesting from every angle.”

The Linea Weatherboards have been painted in Resene Baltic Sea, a battleship-grey tone that complements the neutral Resene Pumice shade applied to the grid-like Titan panels.

Linea has also been used on the three-car garage to clever effect. Painted in the same colour as the house itself, it serves to connect the two buildings as one seamlessly flowing unit, enhancing the property's sense of scale.

Silkline® Eaves Lining is another James Hardie product that has been used to line the underside of the home's portico entry-way. Finished in Resene Pumice, it's a smooth, easy-to-install system that, like Titan, works particularly well with Linea's strong, clearly defined lines.

One very impressive feature of the home is the clever way the window areas have been integrated into the overall design plan.

Teaming double glazed Silver Pearl glass, tinted cool green (also available in blue), with colour matched Vantage Aluminium hardware makes for windows that are more than just openings for available light. In essence they become a complementary statement in themselves.

The family entertaining area is yet another aspect of the house that has drawn appropriately serious consideration. It's a space that has clearly been designed to become a focal point of the many and varied activities that are part of every household.

The expansive, paved private courtyard gives way to the must-have 10 metre x 4 metre masonry swimming pool, designed and installed by Pioneer Pools with fencing by Superior Balustrades.

It's easy to imagine the eventual lucky owners cooling off from the effects of one of those hot, dry Canterbury summer's days, before firing up the barbecue for an open-air dinner.

This is the kind of home that doesn't only look good, it could actually be good for you – light, bright, airy, with little or no maintenance required and plenty of fun to be had. Little wonder then that it's been the subject of so much public attention.
