What Lies Beneath

Gone are the days when the average domestic bathroom was consigned to the “out of sight, out of mind” category.

Today's bathroom is a showpiece, an oasis of relaxation and one of the first things prospective homebuyers look for when making their purchase decision.

Significantly, this trend hasn't gone unnoticed at leading New Zealand building company Sovereign Homes. As Development Manager Brian Donald sees it, the bathroom isn't an area where it ever pays to skimp on the details.

“We place real focus on building a lot of aesthetic appeal into our bathrooms with inclusions like double-sized showers, spa baths and  dual vanity basins. In most cases, we're talking many thousands of dollars,” says Brian. “Without the proper linings though, it could all be money down the drain.”

That said, it's revealing that Brian and the Sovereign design team insist on using James Hardie Villaboard® Lining in every home they build.

Villaboard Lining is a strong, rigid, impact and water-resistant material that provides an extremely flat substrate for tiles, painted finishes and wallpaper. What's more, its use isn't restricted to bathrooms. It's ideal for any domestic wet area, such as kitchens, laundries and toilets.

“Sovereign's reputation as a quality builder is very important to us,” says Brian Donald. “We don't want unnecessary problems. We want happy clients. So we research every product and if it doesn't measure up, we don't use it. Villaboard Lining is a great product that's never let us down over eight years and more than a thousand homes.”

As mentioned previously, bathrooms, in particular, are assuming greater importance in the overall scheme of most home building projects. So now that we've revealed what lies beneath, let's take a look at just some of the more visible design trends that are emerging in the smallest room in the house.
Essentially there are three discrete themes predominating. These are:

  • Modern Colonial
  • Modern Minimalist and;
  • Spa Resort style.

Whichever style you settle on should be driven by a range of factors, including your own design sensibilities, the requirements of every person in your household and the number of people likely to be using the bathroom on a regular basis.

Beyond the overall design signature, other aspects worth considering are:

  • Task-oriented and ambient lighting
  • Ventilation
  • Wall and flooring finishes and;
  • Storage.

Remember, nothing destroys the natural harmony of any room like unnecessary clutter.

As with virtually every other area in your home, judicious planning of your bathroom build or renovation pays off immeasurably in the long run.

Think of the process and the eventual outcome as an investment in your quality of life, as well as a golden opportunity to create lasting value. The right mix of surface styling and proven protective materials will offer you peace-of-mind for many years to come.
