Builder, Shannon Moyle

Mt Maunganui builder, Shannon Moyle has risen to the top of his trade quickly. Ten years ago he began an apprenticeship with his father, Rex Moyle. Three years ago he bought into his father's business, Moyle Construction Ltd. Today, Shannon and his team of 5 tradesmen and 3 apprentices specialise in building architectural homes at the top-end of the market. Not bad for someone still in their mid-twenties.

“Dad's been in the trade for thirty three years and I've had the benefit of all that experience which he's been able to pass on,” says Shannon. “To have the opportunity to learn so much from your Dad creates a really special relationship.”

“Probably the most important thing that Dad has taught me is that nobody likes surprises. He really impressed upon me how important good communication is. People need a lot of help to visualise the way things are going to look. I do whatever I can up front to make sure that we all have the same vision – I take them around to look at other houses to see what they've done and I encourage them to bring any thoughts or concerns to the table. If they have a problem with something, or a change of heart, the earlier we talk about it, the easier it is to change or rectify.”

“I take great care to make sure everything's documented at weekly meetings with the clients and monthly meetings with the architect.  That way everyone knows their roles and responsibilities – including the client.”

As well as documenting minutes of the meetings, Shannon has recently begun using a digital camera to record the entire building process visually.  The photos provide his client with a helpful record of exactly what has gone where – particularly helpful years down the track to show where pipes are buried and wires are located behind walls.

“I love this business,” says Shannon. “There was never any chance that I was going to do anything else. My team are really passionate, experienced tradesmen, who, like me, enjoy the challenge of working on homes at the top-end of the market. They take pride in being professional and well organised – and the apprentices are learning to do the same.”
