Weatherboard revival, Papamoa

Take a drive along the coast from Mt Maunganui to Papamoa these days and it's hard to find a home clad in painted timber weatherboards.  Understandably, over the last 30 years, home owners in this exposed coastal location have opted for low maintenance building materials to stand up to the salt, sun, and occasional sand-blasting that they receive. But now weatherboards are making a dramatic return to the coast, thanks to Linea® Weatherboards.

Linea Weatherboard is a break-through, state-of-the-art product that is changing the way homes are being designed and built. The high-density fibre-cement weatherboard is virtually indistinguishable from traditional weatherboards, but offers remarkable stability and vastly improved paint life, making it very suitable for use in coastal locations. And because Linea Weatherboard is so stable it can be painted in darker, more contemporary colours, such as dark greys - and even in black - without any concerns about increased heat absorption creating premature paint deterioration.

This contemporary home, at Oriental Parade, Papamoa designed and built by Signature Homes, Tauranga for a National Heart Foundation Lottery, is a great example of the way Linea weatherboards are also being used in combination with another James Hardie product, Monotek® Sheet, to create a distinctive look that is becoming increasingly popular.

The house design, based on Signature Homes popular ‘Axis' series, is one of five that Signature Homes Tauranga have built for the Heart Foundation. The winners now use it as a beach house which they plan to retire to one day.

Linea weatherboards have not only been used to partially clad the house, but have also been used to great effect on a fence at the front of the property, and to clad the chimney to the rear.  The home is painted in Resene Hammerhead.

Inside, the open plan living area, dining and kitchen form the heart of the home. The kitchen, designed by Glynn Patterson of Patterson Kitchens in Matamata, offers generous bench space and storage, with a large Shacklock gas cooktop for serious cooking and stainless steel Fisher and Paykel appliances creating a clean urban look.

The high ceiling in the lounge creates a sense of spaciousness and light, with sliding doors opening out onto the north-facing courtyard area. In winter, the Rinnai free-standing gas fire provides a warm cosy focus for the room.

A feature wall behind the dining table has been painted ain Resene Masala which not only helps to define the area, but also creates a sense of intimacy.

The main bathroom is a real talking point – with dramatic red floor tiles and smaller caramel coloured wall tiles lining the shower and the bath surround.  Villaboard Lining has been used under the tiles around the bath surround to create a solid impervious base.
