John Penny of Penny Developments has been busy. During the past year his company has built more than 85 90 homes in the Taupo area and a good number of those are all in one development the Brentwood Subdivision just 1.8 km from Taupo town centre. John is a structural engineer by trade, but entered the residential building market seven years ago when he built a couple of spec-houses in the Brentwood Subdivision. At that time, the property market was fairly stagnant, but the two houses John built sold quickly. The Brentwood developer was impressed and offered Penny Developments exclusive rights to the subdivision. Since then the company has gone from strength to strength, designing and building dozens of houses in Brentwood and in the greater Taupo area. People can come to us for the whole package land, design, building and landscaping, says John. They can literally walk in, choice their site, choose their house from pre-existing plans and walk through the door of their completed home 18 weeks after signing up! Of course, for most people, pre-set plans are just a starting point that they can adapt to their specific needs. It's more common for people to sit down with designers, talk about the sort of house they want, and work through the designs from scratch, says John. We provide a design service in conjunction with JT Design Ltd, who have designed the majority of the homes here in Brentwood including our new Show Home. By controlling the design of the houses we are not only able to create a particular style, but we can also ensure that homes are designed to preserve views and light, so there's no chance that someone's going to build a monstrosity next door that's going to block views or light.
