Get an idea of costs

If getting ideas is exciting, getting costs is downright sobering. This is when reality comes crashing in and you decide that you probably can  live without the six-burner stove, or the water feature wall!

  • Get an idea of the value of homes in the area – talk to real estate agents or a valuer.
  • Investigate the cost of the materials you like. Find out what labour costs are involved in using them. Research alternatives.
  • Think about what you can feasibly do yourself and what you won't be touching.
  • Cost appliances you like.
  • Have preliminary talks with builders and architects to get some idea of what their charges will be.  Even before preliminary plans are drawn up, they may be able to suggest ball park figures.
  • If possible look at houses that they have built to get some idea of what you get for your money.
